Grade 2 age 7–8

What your child practises here in Grade 2, with a real lesson and question from each subject.

Grade 2 math here is two-digit adding and subtracting, and first steps in multiplying. Not here yet: numbers past 100, money, telling time, among others. When your child has learned these, the level moves up. Use it alongside what the school sends home. See the detail

  • A short lesson first
  • Worksheets of 20 to 25 questions, in rounds of 5 or 6
  • Learned means 3 in 4 right, on two different days

Math

Two-digit adding and subtracting, skip counting, first steps in multiplying.

From the lesson · Adding two-digit numbers

28 + 35 = ?

128+3563
  1. Ones first: 8 + 5 = 13.
  2. Regroup 13 as 1 ten and 3 ones. Write the 3.
  3. See the small 1 over the tens? That is the new ten.
  4. Tens: 2 + 3 + 1 = 6 tens.
  5. Check: is 63 close to 30 + 35?

28 + 35 = 63

Most schools teach these this year too. Until they are here, use what your school sends home for them.

English

Nouns, verbs and adjectives, and short reading.

From the lesson · Nouns

Find the two nouns in 'The gardener planted a tree.'

  1. Go word by word and ask whether it names a person, a place or a thing. 'The' does not name anything, it only points.
  2. Gardener names a person, so that is one. Planted is something being done rather than a thing, and 'a' only points.
  3. Tree names a thing, so that is the second. Neither names one PARTICULAR gardener or tree, so neither takes a capital letter.

Answer: gardener and tree

AI literacy

What data is, why AI guesses, and keeping information private.

From the lesson · What data is

A tally of how children get to school has 7 marks for walk, 3 for bus and 4 for car. How many children were counted altogether?

01234567childrenwalkbuscar
  1. Each tally mark stands for one child, and so does each block in the chart.
  2. Add the three groups together: 7 + 3 + 4.
  3. That makes 14 children.

Answer: 14

What Grade 2 AI literacy practises here

  • What data isdata as recorded information (counts, pictures, sounds, choices people made) and reading a simple tally chart or pictograph
  • Good examples, better learninghow the examples a computer learns from decide what it can recognise, and why the examples must be varied and correctly labelled
  • Spotting pictures & soundshow phones and apps tell faces, objects and spoken words apart by comparing them with patterns learned from many examples, and what makes that harder (dark photos, noise, unusual angles)
  • AI makes guessesAI gives its best guess rather than a certain answer, can be wrong, and important answers should be checked with a trusted adult or source
  • Keeping information privatewhich information is private (full name, home address, school, passwords, photos of yourself) and why not to share it with apps, chatbots or people online

Not sure Grade 2 is right?

Each grade here practises the main topic most schools teach that year. It is not everything your child's school covers. Grades are a guide, not any province's program, so a short warm-up checks your child's level first, in each subject: a child can be in one grade for English and another for math. The level moves up as they learn.
