Grade 1 age 6–7

What your child practises here in Grade 1, with a real lesson and question from each subject.

Grade 1 math here is adding and taking away to 20, and tens and ones. Not here yet: money, the calendar, measuring, among others. When your child has learned these, the level moves up. Use it alongside what the school sends home. See the detail

  • A short lesson first
  • Worksheets of 20 to 25 questions, in rounds of 5 or 6
  • Learned means 3 in 4 right, on two different days

Math

From the lesson · Adding within 20

8 + 6 = ?

  1. 8 needs 2 more to reach 10, so split the 6 into 2 and 4.
  2. Add the 2 first: 8 + 2 = 10.
  3. Now add what is left of the 6: 10 + 4.

  1. Check the IF part: is the dog at the door?

What Grade 1 AI literacy practises here

  • Senses & sensorsmatching human senses to machine sensors (camera and eyes, microphone and ears, touch screen and touch, thermometer and feeling hot) and what each one can notice
  • If-then rulesfollowing and choosing simple if-then rules (if it is raining, then take an umbrella; if the light is red, then the robot stops)
  • Describing with featuresdescribing things by their features (has wings, has wheels, is round, can swim) and using one feature to sort them
  • Learning from exampleshow people and computers learn what something is by seeing many examples of it, and why lots of different examples help more than many of the same one
  • People make machinespeople design, build and program machines and AI; AI is a tool, not alive, and people decide what it is for

Not sure Grade 1 is right?

Each grade here practises the main topic most schools teach that year. It is not everything your child's school covers. Grades are a guide, not any province's program, so a short warm-up checks your child's level first, in each subject: a child can be in one grade for English and another for math. The level moves up as they learn.
