Kindergarten age 5–6

What your child practises here in Kindergarten, with a real lesson and question from each subject.

Kindergarten math here is counting, numbers to 20 and four flat shapes. Not here yet: coins, measuring, 3D shapes, among others. When your child has learned these, the level moves up. Use it alongside what the school sends home. See the detail

  2. Does it eat or drink? Yes — a tree drinks water through its roots, and it needs sunlight too.
  3. Was it made by people? No — it grew from a seed. So it is alive.

What Kindergarten AI literacy practises here

  • Living things & machinestelling living things (people, animals, plants) apart from machines and objects: living things grow and need food or water, and people and animals have feelings; machines need power, do only what they are built to do, and have no feelings, even when they talk
  • Following steps in orderputting two to four simple instructions in the right order (getting dressed, a robot moving to a toy) and seeing that a machine does exactly what its steps say, even when the steps are wrong
  • Sorting by one rulesorting everyday things by one rule (colour, shape, size, what it is used for) and spotting the one that does not belong
  • Spotting patternscontinuing a simple repeating pattern of colours, shapes, sounds or actions and saying what comes next
  • Machines that help uswhat everyday machines and smart helpers do for people (a washing machine, a calculator, a robot vacuum, a voice helper, a map on a phone)

Not sure Kindergarten is right?

Each grade here practises the main topic most schools teach that year. It is not everything your child's school covers. Grades are a guide, not any province's program, so a short warm-up checks your child's level first, in each subject: a child can be in one grade for English and another for math. The level moves up as they learn.
