What math level should my child be at? A grade-by-grade guide for parents
Report cards rarely answer the question parents actually have: is my child roughly where they should be? Here is a plain map of what most curricula cover, year by year, plus how to check informally at the kitchen table.
One caveat worth stating up front: curricula differ by country, province, and state, and children develop unevenly. Treat this as a rough guide, not a standard to measure a child against. Being a year off in one topic is common and usually fixable.
The rough progression
- Kindergarten — counting to 20 and beyond, recognising written numbers, comparing more and fewer, naming basic shapes.
- Grade 1 — addition and subtraction within 20, place value to 100, simple measurement, telling time to the hour and half hour.
- Grade 2 — addition and subtraction within 100, skip counting, introduction to arrays and repeated addition, money and measurement.
- Grade 3 — multiplication and division facts, fractions as parts of a whole, area and perimeter, telling time to the minute.
- Grade 4 — multi-digit multiplication, introduction to long division, equivalent fractions, an introduction to decimals.
- Grade 5 — adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, multiplying and dividing decimals, volume, the coordinate plane.
- Grade 6 — ratios and rates, percentages, negative numbers, simple algebraic expressions.
- Grade 7 — proportional relationships, operations with all rational numbers, first linear equations, basic probability.
- Grade 8 — solving and graphing linear equations, exponents and scientific notation, the Pythagorean theorem, introduction to functions.
- Grade 9 — algebra proper: systems of equations, quadratics, and functions in more depth.
How to check without making it a test
You don't need a formal assessment. Pick two or three ideas from the list for your child's grade and turn them into ordinary conversation — while cooking, in the car, at the shops. Ask them to explain rather than to answer: "how would you work out how much three of these cost?" What you're listening for is not the right number, but whether they have a method.
A child who says "I'd do three times four" understands the concept even if they get twelve wrong. A child who guesses, or who counts on fingers for a fact they have practised for two years, is telling you something more useful than a score.
If your child seems behind
First, the reassuring part: being behind in math is almost always a gap, not a ceiling. Math is unusually sequential — nearly every topic stands on an earlier one — so a child who missed fractions in Grade 4 will look "bad at math" in Grade 6 while actually having one specific, fixable hole.
That is why the most valuable thing you can do is find the exact level where the ground is still solid, and start there. Working at a level that is too hard produces the anxiety and avoidance that parents mistake for a lack of ability. Working slightly below the frustration point rebuilds confidence surprisingly fast.

What not to worry about
Comparisons with siblings and classmates are rarely informative — arithmetic fluency in particular arrives at different ages. Speed matters far less than parents assume; understanding a method and being slow at it is a much better position than being fast with a method the child cannot explain.
